Moke formed in London, England in 1997 and comprised John Hogg (vox), Sean Genockey (guitar), Alex Evans (bass) and John Morgan (drums). Moke's first gig was at the Rock Garden in London's West End. Through a mutual friend, the owner of an independent label Dorado was in the audience and the band were offered a recording contract to make a single. I Dream Abused was released in July '97 to critical acclaim and Moke quickly signed to Dorado for a five album deal. Opting to record before touring, Moke ventured into Chiswick Reach studios to record their debut LP Superdrag, co-produced by the band and Dave Eringa. |
Moke's first UK tour, sponsored by Melody Maker, saw the band developing their live set. During this tour, the single My Desire was released, making the XFM playlist. Whilst touring the UK and Europe in support of Superdrag, the band were scouted by a new US label, Ultimatum Music. On signing to Ultimatum, Moke crossed the Atlantic and their debut US show was at LA's notorious Viper Room. The Autumn of '98 saw Moke beginning an extensive coast-to-coast tour of the US. As word about the band began to spread, The Black Crowes offered Moke the support slot on their Souled Out tour. Debut LP Superdrag was released in the US as a self-titled album in the Spring '99. |
The band continued to tour the US throughout '99 and 2000. Singles Down and Wheel In Motion were released and received widespread airplay at rock radio across the States. An MP3.com sponsored tour with fellow artists Goo Goo Dolls, Tonic and Fono saw the band performing to thousands of people a night. It was time to make another record... |
Carnival was recorded over several months at Rockfield and Strangeways Studios. Produced by Paul Stacey and mixed by Bob Clearmountain, Moke's second album was released in March 2001. Carnival spawned the single, My Degeneration, which due to extensive airplay reached No.17 on the Billboard rock chart. However, by now, Moke were feeling tired. In early 2002, the band decided they would stop for a while and rest... |
Since then, John H has formed a new band, Hogg. Sean has become a record producer. Alex is a University lecturer. John M has rejoined the original lineup of Senser.
